6 Wedding Gifts No Couple Wants to Receive

wedding gifts

The anticipation when you start to open a wedding gift is high: Will the contents of the box be that deluxe coffeemaker that brews lattes and espressos you registered for, or could it hold the gorgeous stand mixer you loved the moment you saw it in the store? The box is open, the tissue paper unfolded, and you lift out the gift: It’s…an electric cheese grater. What? Why? You don’t come across as a person who needs voltage to grate her Parmesan. But bad gifts happen all the time, so be prepared for what lies ahead. Here are more presents that are generally unwelcome.

Anything that’s not on the registry.

Why veer off to the Land of Non-Registry Gifts, where the temptation to buy odd appliances and statues of farm animals is as strong as an ocean current? Buying a gift from the bride and groom’s registry is the way to go. It’s easy, it’s quick, and it’s a guaranteed winner. They picked out some items they really, really like, put together a list, and told people about it. Gift buying couldn’t be easier.

Something that suits the giver but not the couple.

Monogrammed towels are lovely but very traditional. So are crystal candlesticks and fine china. But if the couple has a very informal lifestyle where personal lettering and shiny things are of no interest, the gift giver is better off getting them the wind-surfing lessons they registered for instead.

Re-gifted items.

Oh yeah, it happens. There are brides and grooms who’ve found a “Merry Christmas, Judy” tag stuck to a box of napkin rings or a toaster in a yellowed box that looks like it’d been sitting in the basement for years. Everyone likes to save a buck but giving someone a gift you’ve rejected is just wrong.

“Cute” his-and-hers gifts.

If an engaged couple truly wanted matching aprons or bathrobes, they would’ve registered for them.

Artwork.

Surprised by this one? The reason it ranks as a worst gift is because no one is gifting a Matisse or Warhol—the newlyweds are more likely to get a kitschy painting of kittens dressed as pirates. Unless the gift-giver knows the taste of the couple extremely well, they need to step away from the wall art.

A bounced check.

This gift is just as embarrassing for the couple

Land Rover

For another take on a vintage four-wheeler, this Italian couple (and their dog!) drove an old-fashioned Land Rover through the mountains to the bride’s childhood home for the wedding reception.

Motorcycle

Adventurous couples, this one’s for you—ride off into the sunset on board a a mini motorcycle. Just make sure the bride’s train doesn’t get stained!

What’s the Best Day of the Week to Have Your Pre-Wedding Events?

Pre-Wedding Events

We’re often asked which is the best day of the week to host bridal showers, bachelorette parties, engagement parties, and other pre-wedding events. While we usually opt for a day that falls on a weekend, there are a few other factors to consider, too. Here some tips to help you decide which day to choose for each of your important pre-nuptial celebrations.

Take location and calendar into consideration.

If you’re planning a pre-nuptial celebration that requires guests to travel any more than 30 minutes from home, a weekend event date is usually going to be your best bet. With the crazy work hours guests have during the week, it’s likely they’ll be more flexible and more likely to be available on the weekends. Be sure to check the local events calendar wherever you’re planning your pre-wedding event. If there’s a major sports event, festival, or parade going on near the party location, traffic could be a real headache. Plan to avoid these dates when possible.

Be wary of holiday weekends.

It’s tempting to book a bachelorette party or bridal shower over a holiday weekend, especially because you know you and your guests will have an extra day or two free, but this may not always be such a great idea. Event prices, hotel rates, airfare, and more increase during long weekends. As well, many people save their holiday weekends to do something special with their families and they may not want to travel during this time.

Weekends for the win.

Weekdays are tough enough for most of us, balancing work life and home life. While Fridays tend to be more flexible, it’s likely that guests will have to leave work early to make it to an event on time, which isn’t really ideal for most people. Weekends are easier to plan ahead for and less likely to impede your guests’ work calendars.

Saturday vs. Sunday?

Which is better? It’s a matter of personal preference, really. If you know you have a few guests traveling in from out of town to attend your event, Saturday is going to be more convenient. If you’re planning a low-key brunch or late lunch, Sunday may give you more flexibility to prepare for the event and feel more relaxed the day of.

How to Tame Frizzy Hair Before Your Wedding

July 4, 2018 by aaadmin Leave a Comment

Wondering how to stop frizzy hair? We’re with ya. Whether you have fine or curly hair, chances are you’ve experienced out-of-control texture at some point in your life. The good news? It’s totally possible to prevent frizz from becoming an unwanted wedding crasher. Before you say “I do,” check out these frizzy hair remedies that will help you get rid of unwanted flyaways and battle humidity on your big day.

What Causes Frizzy Hair

The first step in solving any problem is understanding it. Simply put, frizzy hair is “any hair type that has a naturally uneven cuticle that doesn’t lay flat,” says Tim Rogers, creative director of Living Proof. “Additionally, hair that has been damaged by heat styling, chemical treatments or UV corrosion can experience frizz.”

Start With A Healthy Diet

If your frizz is due to dryness and damage, stop it at its root (literally!), beginning with breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Incorporate superfoods such as spinach, salmon, blueberries, and dark chocolate to your meals, which will stimulate hair growth, combat dryness, and strengthen those strands. Beyond making you feel your best, what you consume in the engagement months could pay off in the form of lovelier locks on the big day. And if you want to be extra sure you’re getting all the necessary nutrients, a daily multivitamin containing iron, vitamin B12, vitamin D, and biotin will help your hair (not to mention your nails) grow fast and strong.

Communicate With Your Stylist

Honesty is always the best policy. When you get your hair cut, clue your hair pro in on your concerns so she can use techniques that combat frizz. “Always tell your stylist that frizz is a concern, so layering can be managed and minimized—no shags—and the use of a razor can be managed or avoided,” Rogers says.

Re-think Your Wash & Dry Routine

Though some will tell you that it’s best to cut down on your washes to prevent dry, damaged hair, Rogers says that it depends on the shampoo you’re using. “Washing the hair often with astringent formulas can damage the cuticle layer over time,” he says. Instead, look for one that fights frizz and blocks humidity, like Living Proof No Frizz Shampoo and Conditioner, which contains a patented Healthy Hair Molecule (OFPMA). “It’s more effective than other ingredients due to the fact that it creates an invisible shield around each strand, which works better than oil and silicone formulations at repelling humidity and stopping frizz before it starts,” Rogers says. Basically, the bottles are superheros in the shower department ($24 each).

Once it’s clean, don’t yank a brush through it. Instead, run a wide-tooth comb through your hair while it’s still conditioning. And rather than aggressively scrub-drying your ‘do with a towel, which raises the cuticle, use a gentle blotting motion. “Diffusing is fine if a wavy, natural look is desired,” Rogers says. “Otherwise, I recommend gently stretching the roots and mid-lengths with a flat Denman brush as blow-dry prep.”

Style It Right

When it comes to styling for the wedding, Rogers says it’s always best to start with clean hair: “One urban styling myth is that you shouldn’t wash your hair on your wedding day because the hair will be too ‘flyaway’ or ‘soft’ to style,” Rogers says. “With the styling technologies we have available to us, we can synthetically create great styling results without having to rely on ‘day-old hair’.” After all, “if you’re putting the work in to blow dry from scratch, don’t you want it to last as many days as possible?”

Avoid the Heat

Try to cut down on hair dryer, straightener, and curling iron use in the months leading up to your wedding, but don’t let it stop you from doing you. “We all know that high heat can damage hair,” Rogers says, “but if you need that extra bit of insurance against frizz and general ‘style failure,’ go ahead and use a flat or curling iron to lock in your shape. Just be sure to use both a great heat protectant and limit the heat setting to 350 degrees.” John Frieda Frizz Ease Original 6 Effects Serum is another tried-and-true favorite of brides and pros alike (it’s won three consecutive Big Day Beauty Award titles for the best frizz fighter!), that’s seriously clutch at controlling frizzy hair ($8).
